Feathered Nests
We build birdhouses to the birds' standards!
About Us

About Us

Feathered Nests resulted from the collaboration of two enterprising retired women who work very well together but have different interests. My associate wanted to continue developing her woodworking skills, and I liked the creative side of design and painting. We both like having a yard filled with bird feeders and plants that attract birds, bees, and butterflies.

When we started the business we knew very little about the construction of birdhouses. This may sound like a strange statement to include when we are trying to sell you custom built birdhouses so let me explain. As we began developing our product line, we researched birdhouses and learned that many of the birdhouses we had purchased over the years were very decorative but were not functional.  In other words they would not attract birds because of their size and construction. This probably explains why we never saw any birds flying in and out of them!

We learned that each variety of birds has a preference for the type of house in which it lives that includes the size of the nestbox and entry hole, the height of the entry hole from the floor of the nestbox, and placement of the birdhouse. We also discovered that while perches look cool, they are not in the best interest of the birds as they make it easier for predators to attack the nest inside the birdhouse.

After a lively debate between the two of us over form versus function, we decided we would custom build birdhouses that first and foremost were functional. The decoration, while important to one of us, would be secondary.

Our goal is to build a product that you and the birds will enjoy. We are also enjoying the learning that has come with the manufacturing and distribution of our products. We welcome any insights you may have.
